the printer seems to be stuck on draft mode; I am unable to change the print mode to normal. I know the printer is almost 10 years old and is very much out of warranty. Any ideas of suggestions

Hi @Caho2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is stuck in draft mode and you're unable to change the print mode, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

Printer Settings:

  • Check the printer settings on your computer or the control panel on the printer itself. Ensure that the print quality setting is set to normal or higher. This may involve navigating through the printer menu on the printer's display or accessing printer properties on your computer.

Driver Settings:

  • Make sure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause printing issues. You can download the latest drivers from the official HP website.

Reset Printer Preferences:

  • Try resetting the printer preferences to default settings. This can usually be done through the printer's control panel or settings menu. Refer to your printer's user manual for instructions on how to reset preferences.

Firmware Update:

  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can resolve various issues and improve compatibility. You can find firmware updates on the HP support website.

Printer Calibration:

  • Some printers have a calibration or alignment process that can be initiated through the settings. Running a calibration might help resolve print quality issues.

Check Toner Levels:

  • Ensure that the toner cartridges have sufficient toner. If the toner levels are low, it might affect print quality. Replace any low or empty cartridges.

Print a Configuration Page:

  • Print a configuration or test page directly from the printer. This can help you determine if the issue is related to the printer itself or the computer settings.

Keep in mind that due to the age of the printer, it's possible that certain components or settings may be less responsive. If you've exhausted all troubleshooting options and the issue persists, it might be worth considering a replacement printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
