HP Envy 4520 ink jet printer
printing bottom 1/2 of the letters/text but not the top. It happened after I cleared a jam and after I had put new cartridges in. I ran the clean print head function but printing error did not correct. Cartridges are pretty new… I use it weekly. Seeing if there’s any fix versus trashing it for a new one.

Hi @MAK61,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the issue with your HP Envy 4520 printer may be related to either the printhead, ink cartridges, or a misalignment caused by the recent paper jam. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue before considering replacing the printer.
Check for Remaining Paper Jam
Even if you cleared the jam, make sure there are no small bits of paper or debris left in the printer. Use a flashlight to inspect the interior of the printer and carefully remove anything that might be obstructing the paper path.
Check Ink Cartridges
Even though the cartridges are new, they could be improperly seated or not making full contact with the printhead. Try the following:
- Remove the ink cartridges, then reinsert them carefully, ensuring they click into place.
- Double-check that they are the correct cartridges for your model.
Printhead Cleaning
Since you’ve already run the built-in printhead cleaning, you might want to try cleaning the printhead manually as well:
- Power off the printer.
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Use a soft cloth or paper towel lightly dampened with warm water and gently wipe the printhead area.
- Let the printhead dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
Run a Print Quality Diagnostic
Most HP printers, including the Envy 4520, offer a diagnostic tool that you can use to test the print quality. This will help identify any issues with the ink flow or the printhead.
- On the printer control panel, navigate to the "Setup" or "Tools" menu.
- Look for an option to print a "Print Quality Report" or "Printer Diagnostic Report."
- Analyze the report to see if there are missing colors or areas where the ink isn’t flowing correctly.
Check for Software/Driver Issues
Sometimes, software or driver glitches can cause printing issues:
- Ensure that the latest printer drivers and firmware are installed on your computer.
- Try printing from a different device or application to rule out any software-related problems.
Reset the Printer
Performing a factory reset can sometimes help clear up issues caused by software or settings:
- Go to the printer settings, look for a "Restore Defaults" option, and follow the prompts.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
