Recently purchased at Walmart both a 67XL black and Tri Color cartridge for my Desk Jet 2700,  when I put them in the Black one would not communicate with the printer and kept showing as empty. When I put back the old black cartridge the color would work. HP support sent me a new 67XL cartridge. Now I have the problem in reverse. The Color will show as full but on first print reverts to showing as empty. I have gone through all the steps of cleaning, rebooting the printer, the problem persists.

Hi @mattbarr66,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your DeskJet 2700 is not recognizing the new 67XL cartridges correctly, even after cleaning and restarting. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Reset the Printer
A fresh reset can clear temporary cartridge-communication errors.
Power on the printer, disconnect the power cord while it’s still on, wait 60 seconds, reconnect, and turn it back on.

Reinstall Both Cartridges Together
The DeskJet 2700 reads both cartridges as a pair.
Remove both cartridges, clean the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, reinstall them firmly, and close the lid.

Check for Protective Tape or Residue
Even a small adhesive piece can prevent proper detection.
Make sure the orange protective tape is fully removed and check for glue residue on the contacts.

Try Reseating the Cartridges Multiple Times
Sometimes the printer needs a few re-reads of the chip to register levels correctly.
Remove and reinsert the cartridges 2–3 times, ensuring they click into place.

Update the Printer Firmware
New cartridges may need the latest firmware to communicate properly.
Open the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings, and look for a firmware update option.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts Again
Oxidation or oil from handling can interrupt the chip connection.
Gently clean the gold contacts on both cartridges and the printer carriage using a dry lint-free cloth (no alcohol).

Test Printing With Lid Closed and Open
After installing, print one page with the lid closed, then try again with the lid open if prompted.
This helps confirm whether the issue occurs during the initialization cycle.

Check if the Issue Follows One Cartridge
Swap back the previous working cartridge to compare.
If only one specific cartridge consistently shows “empty,” the issue is likely on that cartridge’s chip.

I hope this helps.
