Error Message:  "The following ink cartridge(s) appear to be missing or damaged:  black"'

I ordered the new cartridges.  On the printer, there is another place for black to be inserted, but the cartridge won't fit.

What cartridges should I buy for the C309g?

The HP Photosmart c309g printer uses five cartridges.  There is a thin Photo cartridge on the left that looks black, then three color cartridges, then a wider Black cartridge on the right side.  You will need to order the proper Black HP 564 or 564XL cartridge, or the Photo HP 564 or 564XL cartridges (in the US).   Here are links to the proper cartridges (for the US) in the HP store:

Black 564

Black 564 XL

You can use either the standard or XL cartridge.  If you do a lot of printing the XL cartridges give better cost per page.

If the printer has been sitting for some time (more than a day) with one of the cartridges removed you will likely need to soak the printhead to recover from ink drying out.  See the post here for information.
