I have an office jet pro 8710. I replaced a no name brand ink cartridge an an error came up telling me I needed actual hp ink cartridge with a chip. When I went to purchase the proper ink cartridge the sales person told me that I would not be able to use it and that my printer was now shot due to using the no name brands prior. Is he correct or I he just trying to upsell me. don't want to spend the $ on a cartridge if h is right.

@LLagasse, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP genuine cartridge!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The salesperson is right—HP recommends using only genuine HP cartridges to ensure the best performance and avoid compatibility issues. HP uses dynamic security features that can block non-HP cartridges, especially if they don’t have an original HP chip.
