Hi @898,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP LaserJet M404dn is displaying a message to replace the indicated cartridge and none of the buttons seem to work, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue.

Check the Error Message: Take note of which cartridge the printer is indicating needs replacement. It might be the toner cartridge or another component.

Inspect the Cartridge: If it's a toner cartridge that needs replacement, open the printer's front cover and carefully remove the old toner cartridge. Check if it's indeed empty or if there's any damage.

Replace the Cartridge: If the cartridge is empty or damaged, replace it with a new one. Make sure it's a compatible and genuine HP cartridge for your printer model.

Reset the Printer: After replacing the cartridge, close the front cover securely. Sometimes, the printer will automatically reset and clear the error message. If it doesn't, proceed to the next steps.

Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer by unplugging it from the power source or using the power button if possible. Wait for a minute or two, then plug it back in or turn it on.

Perform a Hard Reset: If the error message persists, perform a hard reset by following these steps:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for a few minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cable.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Factory Reset (as a last resort): If the issue still persists, you can perform a factory reset on the printer. Please note that this will erase all settings, so only do this if other steps have failed. To do a factory reset, consult your printer's user manual for specific instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
