Good morning,

I have an HP 8740 printer with the following error message, which I received after replacing the Magenta Ink Cartridge:

" There is a problem with the supply sytem. Try replacing the affecte3d cartridge wiht a different non-empty cartridge.".

I did already replace the Magenta cartridge and I am receiving the same message.

Thank you,

Jim

Hi @WALLPAPER1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter the "Printer Ink Supply Error" after replacing the cartridge. Since you've already swapped out the Magenta ink cartridge, this issue might be related to a few different things, such as the cartridge itself, the printer’s internal sensors, or even a software glitch.

Here are several steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check the Cartridge for Issues

Ensure the new Magenta cartridge is not defective: Sometimes, even brand-new cartridges can be faulty. Try replacing the cartridge again with a new one (or a known working one if available) to rule out any issues with the cartridge itself.

Inspect the Ink Cartridge Contacts: Take a look at the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer where it connects. If any ink residue or dust is on these contacts, it could prevent the cartridge from being detected properly. Gently clean both the contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry, lint-free cloth.

2. Reset the Printer

A simple reset might resolve any software or system glitches causing the error:

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait for 60 seconds to ensure all internal memory is cleared.

Plug the printer back in and power it on.

After resetting, check if the error message still appears.

3. Check for Ink Cartridge Alignment

Sometimes, if the cartridge is not seated properly, the printer may not recognize it. Make sure the Magenta cartridge is correctly aligned and seated firmly in its slot. Gently press down on the cartridge to ensure it clicks into place.

4. Perform a Printer Reset to Default Settings

You may need to reset your printer settings to resolve any internal configuration errors:

On your printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance.

Look for Restore Default Settings or a similar option and select it.

After resetting, try replacing the cartridge again.

5. Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

6. Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes a firmware update can resolve issues like these:

Check the HP support website for the latest firmware for your printer model (HP 8740).

If there is a firmware update, download and install it following the on-screen instructions.

7. Check for Other Cartridge Errors

While you’ve replaced the Magenta cartridge, it’s possible that another cartridge might also be causing the error. Try removing and reinserting the other cartridges (Cyan, Yellow, and Black) one by one to ensure they’re properly seated. Sometimes, a faulty cartridge can trigger the error message even if it’s not the one being replaced.

If none of the above steps work, the issue could be deeper within the printer's ink supply system, potentially involving the printer's printhead or other internal components

Let me know how it goes!
