I am having a message on my Office Jet 8610 Printer after installing new ink stating I have a problem with Ink or printer.  I have already unplugged and attempted to restart computer without success.  The ink is HP compatible  and  I have used it before without a problem.  Any ideas?

Hi @JLJ6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We’re Here With You. When your OfficeJet Pro 8610 suddenly stops after inserting new ink, especially ink that has always worked before, it can feel jarring, like the printer took a deep breath and then froze mid‑sigh. You did all the right things by unplugging and restarting, and it’s completely understandable to feel stuck now.

Let’s walk through this together. We’ll get your printer’s ink system flowing again.

Step 1: Remove & Re‑Seat All Cartridges

HP support guidance for this issue starts right here.

  1. Power the printer off
  2. Unplug it from the wall
  3. Remove all four cartridges
  4. Check each one for:
    • Protective tape removed
    • No bent plastic or damaged chip
  5. Re‑seat each cartridge firmly, listen for the secure click
  6. Plug your printer back in and power it on

This often restores clean electronic contact.

Step 2: Clean the Cartridge Contacts

HP agents specifically recommend this for the 8610 when ink errors appear.

You’ll need:

  • A dry, lint‑free cloth (coffee filters work surprisingly well)

Gently wipe:

  • The copper contacts on each cartridge
  • The matching contacts inside the carriage
    (Avoid the nozzles, they’re delicate)

This clears tiny residues the printer can’t “see around.”

Step 3: Perform a Full Power Reset

HP’s standard recovery step for ink‑system faults.

  1. Turn the printer off
  2. Unplug it entirely
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Plug directly into a wall outlet (no surge protector)
  5. Power on

This drains the printer’s internal power and resets the ink‑system logic.

Step 4: Check for Firmware Updates (Optional but Helpful)

HP notes that firmware can affect compatible cartridge behavior.

If your printer can reach the menu:

Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer

Sometimes, a later firmware loosens compatibility restrictions that earlier ones tightened.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
