HP 8702 shows yellow ink cartridge as empty.  Efforts to replace still show the same flag.  I have replaced and reset every cartridge with this same flag disabling the printer.  Any help?

Hi @Interiors12345,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet 8702 keeps showing the yellow cartridge as empty, even after replacing it. Let’s troubleshoot together and restore your printer’s functionality:

Step 1: Confirm Genuine HP Cartridge & Compatibility

  • Ensure you're using a genuine HP 952/952XL Yellow cartridge (proper region) and all plastic protective tape is removed. Incorrect or unsealed cartridges can cause “empty” or error flags.

Step 2: Reseat and Clean Contacts

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Remove the yellow cartridge.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the gold contacts on both the cartridge and printer slot.
  4. Let it air-dry for ~5 minutes.
  5. Reinstall firmly until it clicks.
  6. Power on the printer.
    • Often, this helps the cartridge be recognized correctly.

Step 3: Power Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer (keep the printer on).
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • This resets internal memory and can clear cartridge errors.

Step 4: Check Firmware

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
