Hi @Lynfo,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 8702 All-in-One Printer blocks ink cartridges, it’s typically due to one of the following reasons:
- Non-HP Ink: The printer may detect third-party or refilled cartridges and block them. use genuine HP cartridges.
- HP Cartridge Protection: This feature locks cartridges to a specific printer, preventing them from being used in another device.
- Firmware Updates: Some firmware updates restrict the use of non-genuine cartridges.
Steps to Override the Ink Block:
Check for Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure the cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet 8702.
- Use genuine HP cartridges to avoid blocking issues.
Disable Cartridge Protection:
- Open the HP Smart app or printer software on your computer.
- Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Cartridge Protection Settings.
- Select Turn Off Cartridge Protection. Save your settings and restart the printer.
Reset the Printer:
- Remove all cartridges from the printer.
- Turn the printer off, unplug it from power, and wait for 2-3 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridges.
Roll Back Firmware (if recent update caused the issue):
- Download an older firmware version for your printer from the HP Support website.
- Install the older firmware to bypass recent restrictions.
Bypass the Error (if not using genuine HP ink):
- Ignore the error message if printing/scanning functions are still available.
- Some printers allow continued use despite the warning. Look for an option to proceed on the printer screen or software.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer.
- Remove the cartridges and gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
- Reinstall the cartridges and check if the error clears.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
