Hi @Lynfo,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 8702 All-in-One Printer blocks ink cartridges, it’s typically due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Non-HP Ink: The printer may detect third-party or refilled cartridges and block them. use genuine HP cartridges.
  2. HP Cartridge Protection: This feature locks cartridges to a specific printer, preventing them from being used in another device.
  3. Firmware Updates: Some firmware updates restrict the use of non-genuine cartridges.

Steps to Override the Ink Block:

Check for Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure the cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet 8702.
  • Use genuine HP cartridges to avoid blocking issues.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Open the HP Smart app or printer software on your computer.
  • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Cartridge Protection Settings.
  • Select Turn Off Cartridge Protection. Save your settings and restart the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Remove all cartridges from the printer.
  • Turn the printer off, unplug it from power, and wait for 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridges.

Roll Back Firmware (if recent update caused the issue):

  • Download an older firmware version for your printer from the HP Support website.
  • Install the older firmware to bypass recent restrictions.

Bypass the Error (if not using genuine HP ink):

  • Ignore the error message if printing/scanning functions are still available.
  • Some printers allow continued use despite the warning. Look for an option to proceed on the printer screen or software.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Remove the cartridges and gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and check if the error clears.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
