I have an HP8600 Office Jet Pro printer/scanner. It was working fine, I had to change the yellow cartridge and now I'm getting this error message: There’s a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off then on. If problem persists contact HP.
I've turned it off, powered down, tried cleaning the head that pierces the cartridge, tried a different cartridge, nothing has resolved the issue. Any idea how to get my printer working again?

Hi @SHennessey,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding cartridge error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
Perform a basic reset:
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
2. Ensure Proper Cartridge Installation
Verify the yellow ink cartridge is correctly seated:
- Remove and reinstall the yellow cartridge, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
3. Use Genuine HP Cartridges
Non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause issues:
- Ensure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges.
4. Clean the Electrical Contacts
Dirt or residue on contacts can cause errors:
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the yellow cartridge.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.
5. Reset the Printer
A firmware reset may clear internal errors:
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the power source.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
6. Perform Printhead Cleaning and Alignment
If the error persists, try cleaning the printhead:
- Navigate to the printer’s control panel settings and run the printhead cleaning cycle.
- Follow up by running an alignment test if prompted.
7. Check for Firmware Updates
Ensure your printer has the latest firmware:
- Visit the HP Support website and check for any available firmware updates for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.
I hope this helps.
