Some HP printers can use non-HP ink.  Most new printers cannot.

While HP Instant Ink printers can be used with no subscription, select HP Plus printers may require a subscription to operate.
If your printer model ends in the letter 'e' then click the spoiler for special needs.

Spoiler
HP+ printers are designated by a lowercase "e" at the end of their model number (e.g., 8135e rather than 8135). These models are enabled for HP's smart printing ecosystem, which requires a permanent internet connection, an HP account, and the exclusive use of Original HP ink for the lifetime of the printer.

What is your exact printer model?

6165e

Note that this is a peer to peer forum and I am just the messenger of this bad news: Your 6165e is not in the non-HP ink blessed list, sorry.

HP is not the only company that wants their own ink used. The last time I checked, Epson, Canon and Brother all do the same.
