When replacing an ink cartridge, I used non HP  ink.  I received a message stating,  "The indicated cartridges has been blocked by the printer firmware because the contain a non-hp chip...etc.'

So I removed it and replaced it with a NEW HP ink cartridge.   I am still receiving the same message.    I have taken the ink out and put it back in and tried restarting the printer with no change in message.

Hi @ME181614

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're still seeing that cartridge error even after switching to a new HP ink—it must be incredibly frustrating when you've done everything right and the printer still refuses to cooperate.

Let’s gently walk through a few steps to help clear that message and get your pages flowing again.

Try these steps to clear the cartridge block message:

1. Power reset the printer

This helps clear residual firmware memory.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall
  • Wait for 60 seconds
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on
  • Wait until it’s fully idle before proceeding

2. Remove and reseat cartridges with care

  • Open the cartridge access door and remove both cartridges
  • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth
  • Reinsert them firmly until they click into place
  • Close the door and wait for the printer to initialize

3. Check for firmware updates

Sometimes the printer needs a refresh to recognize new cartridges properly.

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page
  • Enter your printer model (e.g., HP Envy 6000 series)
  • Select your operating system and download the latest firmware update
  • Run the update with the printer connected and powered on

4. Use the HP App’s Diagnose & Fix tool

This can help identify and resolve chip recognition issues.

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile
  • Go to Support > Diagnose & Fix
  • Follow the prompts while the printer is connected

If the message still appears after these steps, it may help to try a second new HP cartridge—sometimes the chip on a new cartridge can be misread if it was inserted during an error state. But let’s first see how your printer responds after the reset and firmware update.

Let me know what you observe, and I’ll guide you further.
