Printer HP OfficeJet Pro 8710
Installed genuine HP cartridges and now getting "Supply System Problem". All cartridges are genuine and in good condition. Black and blue cartridges are recognised except Cyan and Yellow. On the phone app, the status of all cartridges register full and then reverts to error and empty status for Cyan and Yellow after a few secs. Cannot print beyond the error message block. Cleaned contacts. Re-inserted cartridges and also rebooted but nothing has worked. Happy for your help to fix this. Thanks in advance.

Hi @RRM11,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is having trouble recognizing the Cyan and Yellow cartridges, despite them being genuine. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the "Supply System Problem" error.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 2–3 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the error persists.
Clean Cartridge and Printer Contacts
Even if you've cleaned them before, try this again:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove all ink cartridges.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the cartridge chip (gold contacts) and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
- Let them dry for at least 5 minutes before reinserting.
- Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click firmly into place.
Check for Firmware Updates
If your printer firmware is outdated, it might cause cartridge recognition issues.
- Go to HP Support → HP Software and Drivers.
- Enter OfficeJet Pro 8710 and check for firmware updates.
- If an update is available, install it and restart your printer.
Manually Reset Cartridge Detection
- Remove all cartridges.
- Power off the printer without reinstalling cartridges.
- Unplug the printer for 10–15 minutes.
- Turn the printer back on and install the Cyan and Yellow cartridges first.
- Insert the remaining cartridges and check if they are detected.

Try Different Genuine HP Cartridges
- If possible, try a different set of Cyan and Yellow HP cartridges.
- If they work, the issue might be with the original cartridges.
Disable Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)
HP sometimes enables cartridge protection, preventing the printer from recognizing refilled or even some genuine cartridges:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Settings.
- Go to Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer > Cartridge Protection.
- If enabled, disable it and restart the printer.
Perform a Semi-Full Reset
This resets the printer to factory defaults.
- On the printer control panel, open the Support Menu (hidden menu).
- Tap Back (⮌) button four times in quick succession.
- Select Reset Menu > Semi-Full Reset.
- The printer will restart; follow the setup process.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Tried every single step provided. Still no luck in getting this fixed. Now the magenta cartridge is low and not one single print can be done because of the original supply restriction on the cyan and yellow. This is incomprehensible. These are brand new genuine cartridges installed and still cannot print.

Thank you for your response @RRM11,
Since the user has tried all troubleshooting steps without success, and the issue has now escalated with the magenta cartridge showing low, here are some final actions to consider:
Final Troubleshooting Steps
Check for Ink Cartridge Authenticity & Region Lock
- Verify the cartridge part number and ensure it matches the region where the printer was purchased.
- If the printer was originally set up in a different region, HP’s regional encoding might be preventing recognition.
Printer Self-Test & Report
- On the printer, go to Setup > Reports > Print Status Report (or a similar option).
- If this does not print, it further confirms a supply recognition issue.
Try One Cartridge at a Time
- Remove all cartridges.
- Insert only the Cyan cartridge and check if the printer registers it correctly.
- Then add the Yellow cartridge and observe.
- Continue one by one to see which exact moment the error appears.
Disable HP Cartridge Protection (Again)
- If available, try disabling it again via Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer > Disable Cartridge Protection.
Service Mode Reset (Not a Semi-Full Reset)
- There is a deeper reset available via the hidden service menu.
- If accessible, try "NVRAM Reset" or "OOBE Reset", but this may require HP Support guidance.
If the Issue Persists
- If brand-new genuine cartridges fail across multiple resets and firmware updates, it is likely a hardware issue with the printer's ink supply system.
I hope this helps!
