I have taken over ownership of a HP Officejet Pro 7740. The previous owner had Office Depot cartridges and the magenta said it was depleted. I inserted all new cartridges - HP ones. The magenta now says one or more cartridge (magenta) is missing or damaged. I have returned and purchased a new set with the same results.
I took the cartridge "Holder" (port) out and blew it off, but no changes.
Does anyone know of a solution? This is a great printer and I hate to trash it.

@SKeefer, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It sounds like you're facing an issue with the magenta cartridge not being recognized properly, even after replacing it. Here are some troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:
Check for Cartridge Contact Issues:
Power off the printer, remove the magenta cartridge, and inspect the gold contacts (the little metal connectors) on both the cartridge and the printer's contact points.
Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab dampened with water. Let it dry for a minute before reinserting the cartridge.
Be careful not to touch the chip on the cartridge, as this can sometimes cause it to malfunction.
Reinstall the Cartridge:
After cleaning the contacts, reinstall the magenta cartridge, ensuring it's properly seated. Sometimes cartridges don't click in properly, and the printer might not recognize them.
Reset the Printer:
Turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall for at least 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can sometimes reset the printer’s sensors and clear any erroneous errors.
Power it back on and see if the magenta cartridge is recognized.
Run HP Smart:
- Download and run the HP Smart. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
- Refer: Use Diagnose & Fix in HP Smart to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
