Hi @MMCGIRE,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding cartridge error!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The error you're seeing on your HP Envy Photo 7830 is usually related to either a connection issue between the printer and the cartridges or a potential issue with the cartridge itself. Since you've already replaced the cartridges and tried restarting the printer, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
Sometimes, the cartridges may not be properly installed, which can cause communication errors.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer to access the cartridge area.
- Remove the cartridges carefully and then reinsert them making sure they click into place securely. Ensure that the color-coded labels on the cartridges match the corresponding slots in the printer.
- Close the printer door securely after reinstalling the cartridges.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
Dirty or misaligned contacts on either the cartridge or the printer can cause communication issues.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the cartridges.
- Using a clean, lint-free cloth moistened with a small amount of water or isopropyl alcohol, gently wipe the gold contacts on both the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects.
- Allow everything to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges back into the printer.
- Turn the printer back on.
3. Reset the Printer
A printer reset can help resolve errors that might not clear up with a simple restart.
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the printer from the power source for about 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
Outdated firmware can sometimes cause communication problems between the printer and the cartridges.
- Open the HP Smart app or go to HP Support online.
- Search for your printer model (HP Envy Photo 7830).
- Check if there is any firmware update available for your printer.
- Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

5. Check for Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure that the cartridges you’ve installed are compatible with your specific printer model. Some third-party or remanufactured cartridges might not work properly with HP printers, even if they seem compatible.
- Make sure you're using genuine HP cartridges that match your printer model. You can verify the cartridge model number on the HP website or the packaging.
- If you're sure you have the correct cartridges but the issue persists, try using the original cartridges (if you still have them) to test if the problem is related to the new cartridges.
6. Perform a Printer Self-Test
Most HP printers have a built-in self-test to check the printer's functions, including cartridges.
- Press the 'Start' or 'Cancel' button on the printer (depending on the model).
- Look for an option to print a diagnostic or self-test page.
- Review the results for any issues related to the cartridges or printing quality.
