My HP 7858 printer is giving me an error message that says "The printer cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer. If the problem persists, replace the cartridges." I have replaced the cartridges and gone through the troubleshooting tips (unplug the printer, clean the copper-colored contacts) and the error message persists. Is there anything I can do to rescue this printer? It has hardly been used, but is out of warranty.

@CHWorkman, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your cartridge issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Yes! Since you've already tried the basic troubleshooting steps like replacing the cartridges, unplugging the printer, and cleaning the contacts, here are a few additional steps to try:
Reset the Printer
A full reset can sometimes resolve communication issues.
- Turn the printer on.
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it's on.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet first, then reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn the printer back on and check if the error persists.
Check for Firmware Updates
- HP often releases firmware updates that resolve cartridge recognition issues.
- Go to HP Support and search for firmware updates for the HP 7858.
- Download and install any available updates.
- Restart the printer and try again.
Ensure You Are Using Genuine HP Cartridges
- If you're using third-party or refilled cartridges, they may not communicate correctly with the printer.
- Try using genuine HP cartridges if you haven't already.
Reseat the Cartridges Properly
- Remove both cartridges and turn off the printer.
- Clean the copper-colored contacts again with a lint-free cloth and distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Let them dry for a minute.
- Reinstall the cartridges firmly and ensure they snap into place.
Check for Blocked Vents or Residue
- Take a look at the small vents on the top of the ink cartridges.
- If clogged, gently clean them with a pin.
Try a Different Cartridge (If Available)
- If you have an old working cartridge, insert it to check if the printer recognizes it.
- This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or the cartridge.
Perform a Hard Reset (Factory Reset)
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to:
- Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore (or a similar option)
- Select Restore Factory Defaults
- This will reset all settings, and you will need to set up the printer again.
Let me know if this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@CHWorkman, Thank you for getting back to us, and I'm really sorry to hear that the issue is still persisting. I completely understand how frustrating this must be, especially since your printer hasn’t been used much. Printers can sometimes be a bit stubborn, and I’d love to help you explore a few more options before giving up on it.
Here are a couple of additional steps you can try:
Clean the Cartridge Contacts on the Printer Side
Since you've already cleaned the cartridges themselves, try cleaning the contact points inside the printer where the cartridges connect. Sometimes a small layer of dust or dried ink can build up here.
Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the contacts.
Let it dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.
Power Drain (A Deeper Reset)
Turn off the printer and unplug it.
Hold down the printer's power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
Plug it back in, turn it on, and see if the error persists.
Printhead Cleaning (If Applicable)
If your HP 7858 has a removable printhead, try gently wiping it down with a damp lint-free cloth to remove any dried ink or debris.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
