Microsoft Windows 11

When I replaced the cartridge, it told me to install a genuine HP cartridge.  I bought 3 different Cartridges 202A and replaced three cartridges........still getting message that it is not genuine. Frustrated!

Hi @Barbara3016

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer is not recognizing the newly installed HP 202A cartridges and is displaying a message stating that the cartridges are not genuine, even though they are.

Here are several steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Ensure the Cartridges Are Installed Correctly

  • Double-check that each of the 202A cartridges is installed properly in the correct slot.
  • Make sure the plastic protective seal or tape has been removed from the cartridge.
  • Sometimes, misalignment can cause the printer to fail to recognize the cartridge, so make sure it clicks into place securely.

2. Reset the Printer

Sometimes, resetting the printer can help clear error messages and reset the connection to the cartridges.

Steps to reset:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  4. Check if the error message clears.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes the contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer may be dirty or have residual toner that prevents the printer from recognizing the cartridge.

Steps to clean:

  1. Open the printer’s cartridge compartment.
  2. Remove the toner cartridges carefully.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth or soft, dry cloth to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  4. Be very careful not to touch the drum (if exposed) as it could be sensitive to fingerprints.
  5. Reinstall the cartridges and check if the issue persists.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

A firmware issue can sometimes cause the printer to incorrectly display the "non-genuine cartridge" message.

To update the firmware:

  1. Go to the printer’s settings on the control panel.
  2. Look for Firmware Update options in the menu and select it.
  3. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware.
  4. Alternatively, you can download the latest firmware from the HP website and install it using a USB or through the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.
