Boy, it's frustrating that you cannot speak with someone when you have a problem.

My printer is a wonderful workhorse. I newscast (from home right now) for a national radio network, and use it to print my scripts. It's reliable, and i can depend on it. And I appreciate that I can can get a larger toner cartridge for it, because I print a lot when working.

So, here's the issue. About a third of the way through the cartridge's life, I start getting that damned popup every time I print saying the toner is low and the cartridge needs to replaced. With the last cartridge, I was able to print for about four months after this popup started.

The popup doesn't go away until you click on it, and I get many of them each time I print my scripts for a newscast. And they block valuable space I need for the newscast. I work from home, and this is my setup - it can't be changed. But if I'm crashing on the newscast, and the popup shows up, it could cause problems, because it covers other things I need for the cast.

I've gone into the toolbox, under the system tab to the supply settings. I have changed the 'low threshold' to 1%. But I'm still getting the low toner alert (a black box in the lower right of the screen) when I print - multiple times. I must click on each one to get rid of it. And it's a real problem.

I assume the settings are for a standard size toner cartridge. But I use the HP 30X longer life cartridge. I would think the little chip would tell the Toolbox it's a larger supply. But the only thing I can figure out is that the Toolbox does not recognize the larger cartridge (even though it is an HP original), so gives an alert when it reaches the capacity of the smaller cartridge. I'm also open to other potential explanations and fixes.

I love this printer workhorse, but I'm ready to throw it out the window and use my Brother printer instead.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

If you have not done so,

If you are running a recent supported version of Windows

Try / Consider

Switch off all -- or some -- of the Notifications --

Anything that bugs you, switch off the notification for that entity.

For example, switch off "Print Notification" notices and anything with the word "Print" in it...

Wording varies by OS / version and installed apps.

Will that work?

Might - I have most everything shut off -- nice and notice-free...

Method - Switch off Notifications (Windows 10 / Windows 11)

Windows 10

Settings > System > Notifications and actions

Below Notifications, set the following to OFF

  • Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows
  • Get notifications from apps and other senders
  • Switch OFF any / all other notifications

Windows 11

Settings > System > Notifications

Notifications “all off” > Slider to OFF

OR

Leave Notifications switched ON

AND

Below Notifications from apps and other senders

Pick and choose – Slider ON or OFF

Scroll down > open Additional Settings

Select / Check box to see:

Unfortunately, my company controls the computer, and I can't get them to turn off notifications. We use too many in our work, I guess, to risk affecting my functionality at work.
