I am trying to install a new cartridge but printer doesn't recognize. I am told to unplug the printer to reset. Can it be unplugged from the back of the printer? Getting to the wall where the plug is means crawling under a large desk. Difficult to do!

Hi @agrias21,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, you can unplug the printer from the back rather than crawling under the desk to reach the wall outlet. Here’s how to properly reset your printer and address the issue with the new cartridge not being recognized:

Steps to Unplug and Reset Your Printer

Turn Off the Printer

  • Use the power button on the printer to turn it off.

Unplug the Power Cord

  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. This should be sufficient to reset the printer without needing to unplug it from the wall.

Wait for 60 Seconds

  • Leave the printer unplugged for at least 60 seconds. This ensures that the printer completely resets.

Replug the Power Cord

  • Plug the power cord back into the printer.

Turn On the Printer

  • Turn the printer back on using the power button.

Additional Steps to Ensure Cartridge Recognition

Reinstall the Cartridge

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  • Remove the new cartridge and ensure there is no protective tape or packaging left on it.
  • Reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it clicks into place properly.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer where the cartridge connects.
  • Let the contacts dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the cartridge.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for any available firmware updates for your printer model on the HP Support website.
  • Download and install any available updates.

HP Smart App or Printer Software

  • Open the HP Smart app or your printer software on your computer.
  • Check for any error messages or troubleshooting options provided by the software.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
