Hello. First, I will describe my problem. I bought my printer and used the ink provided. When it ran out I purchased ink cartridges at staples. As soon as these were installed my printer went off line. HP support is very difficult to get a hold of, but finally they told me that I needed to do HP instant ink. I did it and the printer was immediately back on line. I later got in touch with them again somehow, and I was assured that I could cancel instant ink and use alternative ink. I wanted to cancel because I do not like HP monitoring how many pages I print. It is a bit silly, but why should that be monitored? Well, with alternative ink the printer went back off line. I was disgusted and tired so I just signed up for instant ink again. Printer back on line. I really do not like this situation. When I bought my printer, it was not advertised that I would have to use HP ink and that if I did not that my printer would not work. It also was never stated that HP would monitor my printing habits. I have desperately tried to get in touch with a person from HP to discuss this but the websites just run me around and around and around. Does anyone have a reliable phone number for HP support? I could use it. Thanks. -Dave Rylak

@wscrst, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When you have an Instant Ink subscription, HP sends you special ink cartridges that only work while you’re subscribed. If you cancel the subscription, these cartridges stop working because they belong to HP, not you. Think of it like Netflix. You can watch all the shows and movies while you’re paying for it, but if you cancel your subscription, you can’t watch them anymore. It’s the same with Instant Ink—you can use the special ink while you’re subscribed, but if you cancel, you need to buy your own ink to keep printing.
If you cancel:
At the end of the billing cycle, you must remove Instant Ink cartridges and purchase Original HP Ink or Toner directly from the retailer of your choice to continue printing. Instant Ink cartridges only work in enrolled printers.

You did not address my issue. I canceled instant ink and then bought non HP ink. My printer goes off line and I cannot get it back on line unless I resubscribe to instant ink. Why does my printer fail to work when I use ink from staples or Amazon? That is the question that needs answering. Thanks for trying though. Any chance that I can get a phone number to call for human verbal support?

@wscrst, Thank you for your response.
We suggest you please purchase genuine HP ink cartridges.
As conveyed earlier, when you cancel the subscription, you will have to purchase the Standard/Original HP cartridges.
