Usage can depend on how the printer is being used.

For example, reasons for increased ink usage might include (and not be limited to)

• The type of printing -- color photos -- or anything printed in color -- typically use more ink than a double spaced plain text document.
• The size of the print -- color photos printed on larger paper can increase the amount of ink required.
• The density of the object printed -- complex, dense, colorful content uses more ink
• The selected print Quality -- anything printed in "Best" quality uses more ink.  The amount of ink used increases with the size, color, and density of the output.    The extra ink might be worth the result -- or not.

• The size of the cartridge does not make a difference to the amount of ink used -- the smaller cartridges do run out of ink sooner and might increase the perception that "more ink is being used".

Ink usage might increase if the printer is in need of maintenance.

Make sure the printer is ready to do its best work:

HP DeskJet, ENVY 6000, 6400 printers - No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues

Ink usage depends on the type of ink system --

• Printers that use a two-cartridge ink system, for example, can appear to use "more ink" because the three-color ink cartridge must support all color -- and possible some Black -- printing.    On the positive side, printers of this type might support printing "Black Only" when / if the color cartridge is depleted.

• Printers that use a four-cartridge system, might use more of one color than another -- even for black printing.  Black is frequently used at a faster rate -- check back to the type of printing.   Too, the printer might use additional amounts of yellow ink -- yellow is used with black ink to balance "black like" colors.  Yellow is also used to make green.  Cyan (blue) and Black might be used to make shades of gray - add Magenta to make additional "gray-ish" shades.
