Hello,
I have this portable printer HP Envy 6020e with new cartridges but the printing, both color and B&W, is bad.
It printed out almost like a draft mode or like running out of ink.
I may have not used my printer that often (after purchasing it for almost 3 months) but does the ink dry up if not in regular use?
Will appreciate an expert advise.
Thank you 🙏

Hi @Sazmad,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, ink can dry up or clog in the print head if a printer is not used regularly. Here’s how you can address the issue with your HP Envy 6020e:
**1. Check Ink Levels
- Ink Levels: Verify that the ink cartridges are properly installed and have sufficient ink. Sometimes, even new cartridges can be faulty.
**2. Perform Print Head Cleaning
- Cleaning: Use the printer’s built-in utility to clean the print head. This option is usually found in the printer’s settings menu or in the HP Smart app. This can help clear any clogs in the print head nozzles.
**3. Run a Print Head Alignment
- Alignment: Run the print head alignment utility. Proper alignment ensures that the printer can accurately place ink on the paper.
**4. Check Printer Settings
- Print Quality: Make sure that the print quality settings are not set to “Draft” mode. Set it to “Normal” or “Best” quality in the print settings.
**5. Inspect Cartridges
- Cartridge Installation: Double-check that the ink cartridges are correctly installed and properly seated in their slots.
- Ink Cartridge Contacts: Ensure that the electrical contacts on the cartridges are clean and free from protective tape or packaging.
**6. Perform a Printer Reset
- Reset: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
**7. Check for Firmware Updates
- Updates: Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Check for updates through the HP Smart app or the HP website.
**8. Perform a Test Print
- Test Page: Print a test page or diagnostic page to see if the issue persists. This can help identify if the problem is with specific colors or overall print quality.
**9. Check for Physical Issues
- Print Head: Inspect the print head for any signs of damage or blockage.
- Paper Type: Ensure you are using the correct type of paper for your print job.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
