I need help using 3rd-party inks in an HP OfficeJet Pro 6960. Can I change the printer firmware? HP inks are so expensive.

@DWittrock, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the ink cartridge!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand that printer ink costs can be a concern, and I’d be happy to provide some clarity on using third-party ink with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6960.

HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP cartridges, and here’s why:

  1. Reliability & Print Quality: HP cartridges are engineered to deliver consistent, high-quality prints without smudging, streaking, or fading. Third-party inks may not meet the same quality standards.
  2. Firmware & Security: HP regularly updates firmware to enhance security and printer performance. Non-HP cartridges may not be recognized due to security features that protect your printer from potential risks like leaks or chip malfunctions.
  3. Longevity & Warranty: Using non-HP ink can void your warranty if it causes damage. HP cartridges are tested to work efficiently without clogging printheads or causing hardware issues.

While modifying the firmware to bypass cartridge protection is not recommended (and may not be possible due to HP’s security updates), you might consider HP Instant Ink—a subscription service that provides HP ink at a lower cost with automatic delivery.

Let me know if this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
