HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Cyan doesn't print. It's a 3-in-1 color cartridge, real HP. I've done a 3 level clean, aligned printhead, changed paper. no change. Strange that HP specifically mentions cyan not printing early in the "what's your problem" info gathering stage, but then never brings it up again. Anyway, does anyone have a solution? And an explanation?

Hi @FairyTruth,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand when cyan ink isn't printing on your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One despite using genuine HP cartridges and performing printhead cleanings and alignment, the issue could be related to several factors.

Here are some steps you can try:

1. Check Ink Levels

  • Even though the cyan cartridge is genuine and installed, low ink levels might affect printing quality. Check the ink levels in your printer software or control panel to confirm there's enough ink in the cartridge.

2. Reinsert the Cartridges

  • Remove the ink cartridges, clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth, and then reinsert them firmly. This ensures good electrical contact.

3. Inspect for Blockages

  • Ensure that the nozzles on the cyan cartridge are not blocked. Gently clean the nozzles with a soft, damp cloth.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, firmware updates fix bugs related to ink cartridge detection and printhead performance. Check for firmware updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s software.

5. Manually Clean the Printhead

  • If you've already run the automated cleaning tool multiple times, manually cleaning the printhead may help. Here's how:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Open the printer to access the printhead and cartridges.
    3. Remove the cartridges.
    4. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently clean the copper-colored contacts and the area around the printhead nozzles.
    5. Allow everything to dry before reinserting the cartridges and turning the printer back on.

6. Try a Different Cyan Cartridge

  • Even though you're using genuine HP cartridges, there might be a defect in the cyan cartridge. Try replacing it with a new one if possible to rule out cartridge issues.

7. Run a Diagnostic Print

  • In the printer menu, print a diagnostic page to check if cyan is printing at all. If it's missing entirely, this can help HP support better diagnose the issue.

8. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait about 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any internal issues.

9. Check Printer Settings

  • Ensure that you’re not using grayscale or black-and-white printing mode by mistake in the printer settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
