My HP Office jet 6958, is not printing in color, I replaced the black and all 3 color cartridges with new ones. my computer is set to print in color, but the printer is printing in black only. I also went into tools in the printer and selected the cleaning features, I printed the Printer Status Report and #39 the only estimated ink level that was printed was the black, magenta, cyan and yellow was blank

Please help me !

Hi @Thawaii

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 6958 is refusing to print in color despite replacing all cartridges and setting your computer to print in color. You’ve already tried cleaning the printhead and printing a Printer Status Report, but it only shows the black ink level while the magenta, cyan, and yellow levels appear blank.

I understand how frustrating this must be—let’s go through some detailed steps to fix it.

Steps to Fix HP OfficeJet 6958 Not Printing Color

1. Check Ink Cartridge Installation

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinsert the color cartridges to ensure they are properly seated.
  • Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP 902 or 902XL and not Instant Ink cartridges.

2. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle twice to clear any clogged nozzles.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

4. Check Printer Settings on Your Computer

  • Open Printers & Scanners on your computer.
  • Select your HP OfficeJet 6958 and click Manage.
  • Go to Printing Preferences and ensure Color Printing is enabled.

5. Update Printer Firmware

6. Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Report

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • If color is missing, the printhead may need manual cleaning.

7. Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • This will reset all settings and may resolve the issue.
