HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw
Every page I print has a shadow at the bottom part of the page repeating what is printed on the page (see image for example).
I have followed all the troubleshooting steps in the page "HP Color Laser 178, 179 Printers - Fixing Poor Print Quality" and it did not help. I think it is an issue with the imaging drum. What should I do?
Thank you.

Hi @Sujisures,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you've followed the troubleshooting steps for poor print quality on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw and the issue persists, it's possible that the imaging drum might indeed be the culprit. The imaging drum is a critical component responsible for transferring the toner onto the paper, and if it's not functioning correctly, it can lead to various print quality issues, including ghosting or repeating images.
Here are some steps you can take to address the issue with the imaging drum:
Check the Imaging Drum.
- Remove the Imaging Drum: Open the printer as if you were going to replace the toner cartridges. The imaging drum is typically located beneath the toner cartridges.
- Inspect the Imaging Drum: Look for any visible damage, scratches, or toner buildup on the surface of the imaging drum. If you see any of these issues, it's likely causing the ghosting problem.
Clean the Imaging Drum.
- Cleaning Process: If the drum appears dirty, you can try cleaning it. However, be very gentle to avoid damaging it further.
- Cleaning Method: Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Gently wipe the surface of the drum to remove any toner or debris. Avoid touching the drum with your fingers.
Replace the Imaging Drum (if necessary).
If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, you may need to replace the imaging drum. Here's how.
- Ordering a Replacement: Purchase a genuine replacement imaging drum compatible with your printer model. Genuine parts ensure compatibility and quality.
- Replace the Drum: Follow the printer's manual or instructions to safely remove the old imaging drum and install the new one. Make sure to turn off the printer and wait for it to cool down before handling any internal components.
Test the Printer.
- After cleaning or replacing the imaging drum, print a test page to see if the issue has been resolved. If the ghosting or repeating images are no longer present, then the problem should be fixed.
Additional Tips:
- Update Firmware: Sometimes firmware updates can also address print quality issues. Check HP's official website for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
- Use Genuine Supplies: Ensure you are using genuine HP toner cartridges and imaging drums. Third-party or refilled cartridges might not work properly and can cause print quality issues.
Always remember to handle printer components carefully to avoid damage.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
