My HP officejet pro 8720 just did a firmware update and now I get an error message that my cartridge's are incompatible. This has happened in the past and wasn't easy to get around. I am NOT buying HP cartridges as I can not afford them. How do I get this printer to work again. I'm inclined to throw it away and purchase from a different company to avoid this in the future. Can someone please help here.

Thank you

Hi @rad2101,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you have an issue using non-HP ink cartridges on your printer after updating the printer firmware.

Please refer to the below links for more information related to your issue.

If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and the above links do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!

These links are not solutions at all. All you are suggesting is to replace the cartridge's with extremely expensive HP cartridge's. My printer worked fine before your firmware upgrade stopped it. If you are unable to supply a genuine answer with a link to roll back to the previous firmware then I will be buying from another printer manufacturer and throwing this one away. This is not the first time this has happened and by law I am able to use non genuine cartridges. Previously I have received a link to roll back the firmware. Are you prepared to give me a real solution????

thank you

Hi @rad2101,

I am sorry to hear that the same ink cartridges do not work after the firmware update but there is no way you can rollback the firmware on the printer.

You can use non HP ink cartridges but the chip installed on it depends from one manufacturer to another which might not be compatible.

Please get in touch with the cartridge manufacturer to assist you further as HP has not blocked the use of non HP cartridges.

However, The support here is limited and your concern might require one-on-one interaction to assist you further.

I've sent you a private message with the instructions.
