I can't open my printer lid to replace the ink cartridges.

The ink has run out, despite the 'HP Smart' app saying that there's still ink left.

As a result, the printer lid is refusing to let me open it, and on the screen it says "the door must be shut to prevent damage to the ink cartridges". I just want to replace the ink cartridges.

I'm paying for instant ink too, not sure if this is relevant.

It sounds like your HP Officejet 5230 is giving you some trouble with replacing the ink cartridges. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue.

 

Restart the Printer

Sometimes a simple restart can help clear out any temporary issues. Here's how:

  • Turn off the printer by pressing the power button.
  • Wait for about 10-15 seconds.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check for Obstructions

Make sure there are no obstructions blocking the printer lid from opening fully. Check around the edges of the lid for anything that might be preventing it from opening.

Use Manual Override

Some printers have a manual override for situations like this. Look for a small lever or button near the lid hinge that you can press or slide to manually release the lid.

Use the HP Smart App

Since you mentioned using the HP Smart app, try the following:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone.
  • Look for an option to check ink levels or perform maintenance.
  • There might be an option to release the cartridge lock from the app.

Check Instant Ink Status

If you are subscribed to HP Instant Ink, it might be a factor in how the printer is behaving. Sometimes the printer locks the cartridge access when it detects an issue with Instant Ink.

  • Log into your HP Instant Ink account online.
  • Check if there are any notifications or issues related to your printer or ink cartridges.
  • Follow any prompts to resolve the issue.

Additional Tips:

  • Power Cycle: If restarting didn't work, try unplugging the printer from the power source for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in.
  • Check for Updates: Make sure your printer firmware is up to date. You can usually find this in the printer settings menu.
