How do I know which cartridge (black or color) to replace when I get a message that says I’m low on ink?

@LWG3, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding How to Determine Which Ink Cartridge to Replace!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

When your printer displays a "low on ink" message, it is important to identify whether the black, color, or both cartridges need replacement. Here's how you can determine which ink cartridge is low:

Check Ink Levels on the Printer:

  • On the Printer Control Panel: Many printers have a display that shows the estimated levels of each cartridge. Look for an indicator that shows which cartridge is low.
  • Using Your Computer or HP App: You can also check ink levels through your computer using printer software or an app. For more precise ink level information, access the HP Utility on your Mac or the Printer Toolbox on Windows.

Printer Software:

For Windows:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant or HP Solution Center from your device.
  • Navigate to Print > Printer Toolbox.
  • Select the Estimated Ink Level tab to view the remaining ink levels for each cartridge.

For Mac:

  • Use the HP Utility by double-clicking the icon located in the Hewlett-Packard folder within Applications.
  • Check the ink levels through the provided tabs.

Physical Inspection:

  • Sometimes, the printer might indicate on the cartridge itself whether it's low, through blinking lights or messages that specify which cartridge needs attention.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
