HP Smart Tank Plus 651 Wireless All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

Smart Tank Plus 651 will not print Cyan or Yellow. All ink wells are half full. Black and Magenta print. No print head error is displayed. Clean print head cycled several times without any improvement. How do I fix this?

Hi @AZScot,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Smart Tank Plus 651 is not printing cyan or yellow, even though the ink wells are half full and you've cleaned the print head multiple times, here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can take:

1. Check for Blocked Nozzles

  • Perform a Nozzle Check: Print a test page to see if the cyan and yellow are completely absent. This can help confirm if the nozzles are blocked.
  • Manual Cleaning: If the nozzles are blocked, you can manually clean them:
    • Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe the print head nozzles. Be careful not to damage them.

2. Use the Printer's Cleaning Function

  • Run the Print Head Cleaning Cycle Again: Sometimes running it multiple times can help. Access this through the printer’s control panel:
    • Navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.

3. Check Ink Levels

  • Inspect Ink Levels Again: Make sure the ink levels are indeed adequate. Sometimes, the printer may not register ink levels accurately.

4. Reinsert Ink Cartridges

  • Remove and Reinsert the Cyan and Yellow Cartridges: Sometimes, a poor connection can cause issues. Remove the cartridges, clean the contacts, and reinstall them.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on.

6. Update Firmware

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Make sure your printer has the latest firmware. You can do this through the HP Smart app or the HP support website.

7. Test with a Different Paper Type

  • Try Different Paper: Sometimes the type of paper can affect print quality. Test with standard printer paper instead of specialty paper.

8. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor: This tool can diagnose and fix common printing issues. It’s available from the HP support website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
