Hi @nativebstar,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is not printing blue and you found black and red ink clumped up inside, several issues could be causing this problem.
- Clogged Print Head: The print head may be clogged, especially if the printer has not been used for a while. This can prevent certain colors from printing correctly. Regular cleaning cycles and using the printer frequently can help prevent clogs.
- Old or Dried Ink Cartridges: If the ink cartridges are old or have dried ink, they may not function properly. Ensure that the cartridges are within their expiration date and are stored correctly.
- Ink Leakage: The clumped ink could be a result of leakage from the cartridges. If a cartridge is leaking, it can cause a mess inside the printer and affect print quality.
- Faulty Ink Cartridges: Sometimes, cartridges can be defective. Try replacing the blue cartridge with a new one to see if that resolves the issue.
- Incorrect Installation: If the cartridges are not installed correctly, it can lead to poor ink flow. Ensure they are seated properly in their slots.
- Printer Settings: Check the print settings to ensure the correct color options are selected. Sometimes, printing in grayscale or a specific color setting can affect output.
- Software Issues: Make sure your printer drivers and software are up to date. Outdated software can cause communication problems between the printer and your computer.
- Regular Maintenance: Regularly clean the printer’s interior, including the ink cartridge area, and perform maintenance tasks using the printer's built-in cleaning functions.
After cleaning the interior, try running the printer’s cleaning cycle again to see if that resolves the issue. If problems persist, you may need to replace the ink cartridges.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
