DeskJet 3635
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP printer (DeskJet 3635) has been working fine with an empty colored cartridge and a full black cartridge. I've been using black ink only for about a year and changing the black cartridge whenever it finishes. However, I did this recently and it wouldn't recognize the cartridge. The little cartridge on the screen started to blink and the little light next to the black ink icon started to blink too. When I check the ink maintenance option on my laptop (see here), the colored cartridge has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and the black cartridge has a red circle with a minus sign in it.

I tried cleaning the contacts, but it didn't work. I also tried turning the printer off, holding down the power button and the paper button, and turning it back on. That doesn't work either. I also tried another black cartridge (all the cartridges I use are official full HP cartridges), and that didn't work either. Any tips? I really want to get it working again.

Hi @vvvv1,

If you have already performed the steps from the document Ink cartridge errors and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Hope this helps!

HP has taken full control over the ink cartridges, by using the computer chip on the cartridges and blocking me from using any cartridges that arent full HP ink cartridges.  There is nothing wrong with the printer only that HP has taken  control and block use of any ink cartridge that isnt HP which I cant afford their high cost ink cartridges.  I would like to know how to override this greedy procedure on the part of HP.   If this greedy practice isnt changed on HP part, I will be changing printer brands.

HP blocks the ink cartridges through the computer chip if it isnt their HP cartridges.   They are controlling the ink through the computer chip.

Overriding, as you are calling it can only be done under guidance from HP support as doing the wrong thing can permanently damage or render your machine unusable. You have to contact HP support to help with this.

I have tried every solution 3 times and even re-installed the printer. My printer is out of warrant but I pay the monthly £1.99 plan and they won’t issue a new cartridge. Help!!
