I put new HP color cartridges in my HP 6968 inkjet printer. The printer, however, still did not work with color printing, so I bought a HP 6975 inkjet and moved the new ink cartridges to the new printer. The 6975, however, keeps giving me a message like "These cartridges were already installed in another printer." and will not recognize them in my 6975. Any solutions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

@Chip1701, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It sounds like the new ink cartridges are being recognized as previously used in another printer, which can sometimes happen with HP cartridges due to the chip on the cartridge. Here are the troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Verify Compatibility: Ensure that the ink cartridges you purchased are compatible with the HP 6975 printer. Even though both printers are HP models, certain cartridges may have slight variations.
- Cartridge Model: Double-check that the cartridge model number matches what is required for the HP 6975. For example, if your HP 6968 used HP 902 cartridges, ensure they are also supported by the HP 6975.
Reset the Ink Cartridges
- Turn off the Printer: Power off your HP 6975 printer.
- Remove the Ink Cartridges: Carefully remove the ink cartridges from the 6975.
- Wait a Few Minutes: Let the printer sit for 5–10 minutes to ensure it resets.
- Reinstall the Ink Cartridges: After waiting, carefully reinstall the ink cartridges back into the 6975.
Check the Cartridge Chips
- Clean the Contacts: Sometimes the printer's contact points and the cartridge chips can get dirty or misaligned. Gently clean the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the printer’s ink cartridge slot using a soft, lint-free cloth or a cotton swab. Make sure they are free of dust and debris.
- Reseat the Cartridges: After cleaning, carefully reseat the cartridges to make sure they are securely placed.

Update Printer Firmware
- Check for Firmware Updates: Go to the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check if there are any firmware updates for your HP 6975. Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve compatibility issues.
Reset Printer Settings
- Restore Printer to Default Settings: You can reset the printer’s settings to factory defaults, which could potentially clear any erroneous settings causing the issue. To do this:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.
- Reinstall Cartridges After Reset: After the reset, reinstall the ink cartridges and check if the issue persists.
Use New Cartridges (if Possible)
- If the cartridges are being flagged as “already installed” and not recognized, there’s a possibility the cartridges have been previously registered with another printer. You might want to try using fresh, unopened cartridges to see if the issue resolves.
- HP Instant Ink Program: If your cartridges are part of an HP Instant Ink plan, it might have affected the installation process. You can visit the HP Instant Ink website and check your account to verify if there are any issues with your account or cartridge registration.
You can refer to these resources for additional guidance on HP printers, including issues with used ink cartridges, as well as errors related to incompatible, missing, or unrecognized ink cartridges
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
