HP OfficeJet 5742 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My printer goes through the process ok but nothing is on the paper when it comes out.

I have inserted a new ink cartridge. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer driver. I have run the online diagnostics.

It suddenly started happening. Nothing changed from the day it was working, to the day it stopped working.

Can anyone throw any light on the problem.  Thank you.

Hi @Crafty-Debbie,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 5742 is going through the motions of printing but producing blank pages, here are some steps that could help resolve the issue:

1. Check Ink Cartridges and Installation

  • Ensure that the new ink cartridges are correctly installed and securely seated.
  • Double-check that you removed any protective tape from the cartridges before installation.

2. Run Printhead Cleaning

  • Go to HP Printer Assistant on your computer, select Maintenance, and run the Printhead Cleaning function to clear any clogs. You might need to perform this multiple times.

3. Align the Printer

  • Open HP Printer Assistant, navigate to Printer Maintenance, and select Align Printer. Misalignment can occasionally cause print issues.

4. Check Printer Settings

  • In Devices and Printers on your PC, make sure your HP OfficeJet 5742 is set as the default printer.
  • Also, verify that the print settings are correct for the paper type, quality, and color.

5. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause functionality issues. Check for updates via HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant.

6. Perform a Hard Reset on the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, unplug it from the power source. Wait about a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.

7. Print a Test Page Directly from the Printer

  • Try printing a test page directly from the printer (usually accessible from the Settings or Reports menu on the printer's control panel). This will help determine if the issue is software-related or a hardware problem.

8. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Make sure no other software or print jobs are interfering. Restart your computer to clear any potential conflicts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
