Hello, I have a HP 178nw and despite the few pages printed, streaks appeared when printing. What is it from? Thank you.

Hi @LubomirV

Welcome to the HP support community.

Streaks appearing on prints, even after just a few pages, can be caused by several issues related to your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw printer. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting steps to help you fix the issue:

1. Toner Cartridge Issues

  • Low or Uneven Toner: If your toner cartridges are low or unevenly distributed, it can result in streaks or poor print quality.
  • Fix: Try removing and gently shaking the toner cartridges side-to-side (not too hard) to redistribute the toner inside. Reinstall them and print a test page.

2. Dirty Drum or Developer Unit

  • Drum Issues: The imaging drum in the toner cartridge can get dirty or have toner buildup, which causes streaking. This is especially true if toner powder has leaked or spilled.
  • Fix: Check the drum (if it’s removable) and gently wipe it with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to scratch the surface. Some printers also have a separate drum unit; refer to the printer's manual for guidance.

3. Paper Quality

  • Incorrect Paper Type: Using low-quality or inappropriate paper for your printer (such as paper that is too rough or not intended for laser printers) can cause print issues, including streaks.
  • Fix: Use the correct type of paper recommended by HP for laser printers, and ensure it is stored in a dry environment.

4. Fuser Unit Problems

  • Fuser Malfunction: The fuser unit bonds the toner to the paper. If the fuser is damaged or not heating correctly, it can cause toner to spread unevenly, leaving streaks on the page.
  • Fix: You may need to replace the fuser unit if it is worn out or malfunctioning. Check the printer's user manual for instructions on checking or replacing the fuser unit.

5. Clogged Print Head or Toner Leaks

  • Toner Leaks: If there is any leakage from the toner cartridges, or if toner powder is on the printer's internal components, it can cause smudging or streaks.
  • Fix: Clean any visible toner spills inside the printer with a dry cloth. Be sure to use gloves to avoid getting toner on your hands, as it can stain.

6. Driver or Print Settings Issues

  • Driver Settings: Sometimes print settings can cause print defects. For example, using an incorrect print quality setting might result in streaks.
  • Fix: Check your printer settings in the print dialog on your computer. Make sure you are using the right print quality and media type settings. You might also try running a cleaning cycle from the printer settings if the option is available.

7. Perform a Printer Cleaning or Maintenance Cycle

  • Printer Maintenance: HP printers typically have a built-in maintenance or cleaning function to help resolve print quality issues.
  • Fix: Use the Printer Maintenance or Cleaning option from the printer’s menu (either through the printer's screen or via the HP Smart app). This may help remove any debris or toner buildup that’s causing streaks.

8. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Outdated Firmware: Sometimes, printer firmware issues can cause printing problems.
  • Fix: Check if there is a firmware update available for your HP printer. You can do this via the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

That's an awful lot of reasons. The printer has less than 300 prints. Toners are not below 50%. The drum is fine.
