Printer won't accept new HP 956XL cartridge. Says it's an older generation not compatible. I've used this same type cartridge in the past. Why doesn't it work now?

Hi @Ardubya,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating! Here are a few things you might check:
Printer Firmware Update: Sometimes, printer firmware updates can cause compatibility issues with cartridges. Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer and apply it if there is. hp often release updates to fix issues like this.
Cartridge Authentication: HP printers have a cartridge authentication system. If the cartridge is not recognized as genuine or if it’s a different version, the printer may reject it. Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP and hasn’t been tampered with.
Cartridge Compatibility: Confirm that the cartridge model you're using (HP 956XL) is compatible with your printer model. Sometimes, even within the same series, there can be different versions for different printers.
Printer Model Check: Double-check that your printer model is listed as compatible with the HP 956XL cartridges. Sometimes, older printer models might require specific cartridge versions.
Physical Issues: Inspect the cartridge for any physical damage or defects. Also, make sure that the cartridge is properly seated in the printer. Sometimes removing and reinserting the cartridge can help.
Reset the Printer: Try turning off the printer, unplugging it for a minute, and then plugging it back in and turning it on. Sometimes a simple reset can clear up recognition issues.
Clean Contacts: Check and clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
