My printer will not print the color orange. I suspect it is because I have air pockets in the ink line containing the yellow ink or the connection to the printhead carriage is faulty but I cannot access the printhead carriage to see if the connection is damaged because it will not move to the center when the top is open. Additionally every time I use the HP Smart App or manually on the printer to clean the printhead it either does the process but doesn't fix anything or I get an error message that the task could not be completed.

Hi @jstewart48
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 7001 is struggling with yellow ink flow, which is preventing it from printing orange. Since the printhead carriage isn’t moving to the center, and cleaning cycles aren’t helping, let’s go through some HP-based troubleshooting steps.
Step 1: Check for Air Bubbles in the Yellow Ink Line
- Gently tap the yellow ink tank to see if any air bubbles rise.
- If you see bubbles, try removing and reinserting the ink tank to help clear them.
Step 2: Perform a Manual Printhead Cleaning
- Since the HP Smart App cleaning cycle isn’t working, you may need to manually clean the printhead:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the ink access door and locate the printhead.
- Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently wipe the yellow nozzle.
- Let it dry for a few minutes, then restart the printer.
Step 3: Try a Forced Printhead Reset
- If the printhead won’t move to the center, try this:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on while holding the Resume button (if available).
- This may force the printhead to reset and move.
Step 4: Run a Print Quality Diagnostic Page
- Print a diagnostic page from the printer’s control panel or HP Smart App.
- If yellow is missing, it confirms an ink flow issue.
