Hi @dcjax2005,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it must be to experience printing issues—especially after cancelling your HP Instant Ink subscription—and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify what’s going on and how you can get back to printing with standard cartridges.

How HP Instant Ink Works (Clarified):

HP Instant Ink is a subscription service designed to help you save money and avoid running out of ink. Here's how it works:

  • You don’t pay for ink—you pay for the number of pages you print each month (e.g., 50, 100, or more pages).
  • The printer is connected to the internet, and HP monitors ink levels remotely.
  • Ink is automatically shipped to you when your printer reports it’s low—not every month—so it arrives before you run out, based on actual usage.

This means that you may not receive cartridges every month if your printer hasn’t used enough ink to trigger a replacement.

Why the Printer Isn’t Working Now:

After cancelling the Instant Ink subscription:

  • Any remaining Instant Ink cartridges in the printer are automatically deactivated and will no longer work, even if they still contain ink.
  • The printer must switch back to standard HP cartridges, which are purchased outright from a store or HP.com.

If you have already inserted official HP (non-Instant Ink) cartridges and the printer still will not print, it may still be linked to the Instant Ink system or hasn't been properly reset.

What You Can Do Now:

Please follow the steps below to get your printer working with your standard cartridges:

Step 1: Remove All Instant Ink Cartridges

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and remove any cartridges labelled “Instant Ink.”
  3. Insert only store-bought HP cartridges (non-Instant Ink, original HP brand).

Step 2: Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and power it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
