Hp officejet 6958

We purchased Office Depot brand ink for our printer. Found out that was suddenly incompatible with HP Officejets. Returned the off brand ink for HP brand ink. Suddenly even with compatible ink the printer won't print the new black ink. Spoke to HP support and they mailed us a new HP brand black ink. Still does not work. We are out of warranty. Is our printer useless because HP decided to not allow off brand inks anymore?

@LizSpenger, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

HP does not recommend the use of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work. HP cannot guarantee its functionality and it may have damaged the printing mechanism due to which HP ink cartridges are not recognized too.

Make sure you have tried the steps mentioned in this document - HP Printer Does not Print and Error Indicates Faulty Ink Cartridge

As you have used a new set of ink cartridges and the issue persists, I'm afraid this is a hardware issue. If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

That is sad to see that HP is encouraging us to buy a new printer once their product stops working.

I understand your concern. However, the printers cannot be serviced. If the printer is under warranty, it will be replaced by HP. If it is out of warranty, there are no replacement options. Hence, you will have to upgrade.

Are you suggesting that HP has purposely created a situation where using Non-HP ink causes the printer to malfunction, and therefore stop working?

@JustinP1

No. There are no restrictions from HP for using non-HP ink cartridges, You may use them at your own discretion. If it does not work, HP cannot replace them as they are not from HP.
