I have purchased new ink carts twice and run clean ink heads many times yet won't print color.  Also, cleaning seems to deplete ink levels very fast

Hi @BrianK8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your printer is not printing in color despite replacing ink cartridges and running clean cycles, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Check Ink Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the color ink cartridges are properly installed in the printer. Remove and reinstall them to make sure they are correctly seated.

Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges:

  • Always use genuine HP cartridges as non-HP cartridges might not be recognized properly by the printer and could affect print quality.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Ensure that the ink levels are sufficient. Continuous cleaning can deplete ink levels quickly, and low ink levels can affect color printing.

Run a Print Quality Report:

  • Print a test page to see if there are any specific colors missing or quality issues. This report can indicate if the issue is with the printheads.

Perform a Deep Clean:

  • Some printers offer a deeper cleaning cycle for the printheads which can be more effective than the standard cleaning. Check your printer’s maintenance menu for this option.

Inspect Printheads for Blockage:

  • Check if there are any clogs or issues with the printhead by manually inspecting it if your printer allows.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source, wait for a minute, then plug it back in and restart it. This can sometimes resolve communication issues within the printer.

Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that the printer firmware is up to date. Visit

Take care and have an amazing day!
