Printer won’t print the colour black

When I print the printer status report directly from the printer, the black ink prints perfectly. However, when I print a document from the desktop, the colour black refuses to print. The colours work fine but black text comes out blank. Have tried printing PDFs and Word, but still no black text. I’ve run the cleaning cycles, uninstalled and reinstalled the print software, installed a new cartridge and still black will not print. Why does the printer refuse to print black from the computer but works perfectly fine when printing the printer status report?

When printing internal reports, the printer uses both black and colour to print. If you look closer, that black is really not black, it's a mixed of 3 colour and is't more dark gray/brown but it's not really black.
