HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer

Printer says: can't print until instant ink is installed. I am not a member of that service. It has new cartridges in it. Can't get that statement off to print.

Hello @JAdams69 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

This message appears when the printer is still enrolled in HP Instant Ink or has Instant Ink cartridges installed. Even if you are not an active member, the printer will block printing until this is corrected.

Please follow the below steps and let us know if that works.

Remove the cartridges

Turn the printer on

Open the cartridge access door

Remove all cartridges

Make sure the cartridges are NOT Instant Ink

Instant Ink cartridges are labeled “Instant Ink”

Replace them with standard HP cartridges (not subscription cartridges)

Power reset the printer

With cartridges removed, turn the printer off

Unplug the power cord

Wait 60 seconds

Plug it back in and turn it on

Reinstall the cartridges

Insert the standard (non-Instant Ink) cartridges

Close the cartridge door

Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi

This allows the printer to update its status and clear the message.

If the message still appears, please contact our HP Support to resolve the issue.
