I just unsubscribed from Instant Ink because I don't use enough ink to warrant the monthly fee but now my printer won't work!

Hi @Victoria143,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m sorry for the confusion and frustration this has caused. I understand how concerning it feels to cancel Instant Ink and then find that your printer no longer prints. I’ll clarify what’s happening and how to get you printing again.

When an HP Instant Ink subscription is cancelled, the Instant Ink cartridges that were supplied under the plan are automatically disabled by design. These cartridges remain HP property under the subscription terms and will stop working once the service ends, even if there is still ink inside them. This is why your printer is currently not printing.

To restore printing, you will need to replace the Instant Ink cartridges with standard retail HP cartridges purchased from a store or authorized seller.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Turn the printer ON and open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove the Instant Ink cartridges.
  3. Install new regular HP cartridges (non-Instant Ink versions for your printer model).
  4. Close the door and allow the printer to initialize.
  5. Print a test page.

Once regular cartridges are installed, printing should resume normally without any subscription requirement.

If you’d like, please reply with your printer model number, and we will confirm the exact cartridge numbers you should purchase so you don’t have to guess.

We appreciate you having used HP Instant Ink and are here to continue supporting you with regular cartridge printing going forward.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
