My print quality has been terrible for sometime. After trying multiple troubleshooting steps, I bought a printhead cleaning kit and removed the printhead, flushed out all the old ink, let it dry and replaced it. Now my printer is showing this error message:
"There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non-empty, cartridge. If message reappears again, record message and contact HP."
I've tried replacing the cartridges and the error message persists. Any recommendations for next steps?

Hi @redjitterbug ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you've already tried a lot of the standard troubleshooting steps. Here’s a more detailed approach you can follow to address the "supply system" error with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8730:
Check Printhead Reinstallation:
- Ensure Proper Installation: Double-check that the printhead is properly seated. Sometimes, the printhead might not be fully inserted, causing communication issues with the cartridges.
- Clean the Electrical Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water to clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer where the printhead connects.
Inspect and Reset the Cartridges:
- Remove and Reinsert Cartridges: Remove each cartridge and reinsert them, ensuring they click into place. Sometimes, cartridges can appear seated but aren’t fully engaged.
- Check for Cartridge Damage: Inspect the cartridges for any signs of damage or leakage. If you have a spare set of cartridges, try using them to see if the error persists.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Power Off and Unplug: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug Back In and Restart: Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and wait for it to complete its startup process.
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve errors. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
Reset Printer to Factory Defaults:
- Perform Factory Reset: Access the printer’s settings menu and look for an option to reset the printer to factory settings. This might clear any configuration issues that are causing the error.
Verify Ink System:
- Check for Obstructions: Make sure there are no obstructions or debris in the ink system or printhead area.
- Look for Error Codes: If the printer displays additional error codes or messages, make a note of them, as they can provide more specific information about the issue.
