Hi @Nicksmom,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Photosmart 5520 shows “cartridge missing or damaged” and the carriage is stuck so you can’t access the cartridges. Please try these steps:

Power reset

With the printer on, unplug the power cord.

While unplugged, gently move the carriage by hand toward the center (if it’s locked firmly, don’t force it).

Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

Check for obstructions

Open the cartridge access door and check for any paper jams, tape, or debris preventing movement.

Cartridge reseat

If you can reach them, remove all cartridges, clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, let dry, then reinstall.

Firmware update

If the printer comes back online, check HP Support for firmware updates, as they help with cartridge recognition.

I hope this helps.
