Why is it that the printhead carriage doesn't move at all when I open the door of my Smart Tank 6001? Is this proper? If so, how do I change the printheads?

Hi @printbdh,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When the printhead carriage of your HP Smart Tank 6001 printer does not move upon opening the access door, it could be due to several reasons. Here's a breakdown of the situation and guidance on how to proceed.
Possible Reasons for Printhead Carriage Not Moving:
- Power Issues: Ensure the printer is plugged in and powered on. If it appears to be on, try resetting the printer by turning it off and unplugging it for a minute.
- Obstruction: Check for any obstructions or foreign objects inside the printer that might prevent the carriage from moving.
- Printer State: Some printers have a specific mechanism that prevents the carriage from moving unless certain conditions are met, such as being in a particular state (like during an ink change or maintenance).
- Firmware Issues: Sometimes, firmware glitches can cause the printer to behave unexpectedly. Updating the firmware might help.
Is This Proper Behavior?
In most cases, when you open the access door, the printhead carriage should move to a position where you can access the ink tanks or cartridges. If it does not move at all, it indicates a potential issue that may need troubleshooting.
How to Change the Printheads:
If you determine that the printheads need to be changed but cannot access them, follow these steps:
- Open the Access Door: Gently open the printer's access door. The printhead carriage should ideally move into position.
- Disconnect Power: If the printhead carriage does not move, turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Manual Movement (If Necessary): If the printhead is stuck and you're comfortable doing so, gently try to move the printhead carriage manually. Be cautious not to apply too much force.
Remove the Printhead:
- If you can access the printhead, look for a latch or lever that releases the printhead.
- Carefully lift the printhead out of its slot.

Install the New Printhead:
- Take the new printhead and align it with the guides in the printer.
- Press it down gently until it clicks into place.
Close the Access Door: Once the new printhead is installed, close the access door securely.
Reconnect Power: Plug the printer back in and power it on. The printer should initialize and check for the new printhead.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
