I received an error message to replace my printheads. I did this and attempted to print the alignment page but it is not doing a thing. Also when I lift the cover of the scanner, the bar does not move like it should be.

Hi @Shayshay50,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
When you replace the printheads, and nothing happens, no alignment page, no movement inside the printer when you lift the scanner lid, it can feel like the printer has “gone silent.” You’re not alone, and this behavior does point to something specific inside the printer. Let’s walk through this carefully, step‑by‑step.
STEP 1: Power Reset the Printer (Clears a Stuck Carriage)
This step forces the printer to re‑initialize the printhead system.
- Keep the printer ON.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power from the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds, let the printer fully discharge.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall first, then into the printer.
- Turn the printer ON.
If the printer was “frozen,” you should hear the carriage attempt to move and re‑home itself.
STEP 2: Ensure the Printheads Are Fully Seated
A slightly mis‑seated printhead can prevent the printer from moving the bar and completing alignment.
- Open the ink access door.
- When the carriage stops (or if it is already stationary), gently press down on the printhead latch.
- Remove each printhead and reinstall it until you feel a firm click.
- Close the latch securely.
STEP 3: Check for Obstructions Under the Scanner Lid
If the carriage does not slide when the lid opens, something may be blocking its path:
- Packing tape
- Dry ink buildup
- A stalled service station
- A jammed wiper pad
Gently shine a light inside and ensure nothing is blocking the track.
STEP 4: Run a Printhead Cleaning / Alignment Manually
Since the automatic alignment didn’t start:
- Open HP Smart
- Go to Printer Settings
- Select Print Quality Tools
- Run Clean Printhead
- Choose Align Printhead
This is recommended when alignment doesn’t start automatically after printhead changes.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
