A friend recently gave me the HP ENVY 5646, but I am facing difficulties printing because it seems unfair—and possibly even legally questionable—that I am "required" to subscribe to a plan just to use the printer. I only need to print occasionally and have no interest in enrolling in any subscription plans or relying on cloud-based services.
All I want is the ability to use my computer and printer in a straightforward manner, without being forced into costly or bureaucratic digital procedures. Do I need to discard this printer and purchase a new one, or is there an alternative solution that allows me to use the printer without signing up for a subscription?

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge.
While HP Instant Ink printers can be used with no subscription, select HP Plus printers may require a subscription to operate.
