HP Officejet 6600 - I have full ink cartridges. When I replaced them I started receiving: ’There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem perstists, contact HP.’ No amount of turning off/on - unplugging, etc. has changed anything . . .

Hi @Dpjones15,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" typically indicates an issue with the ink cartridges, printhead, or internal components of the printer. Since replacing the cartridges caused the issue, it's possible there's a miscommunication between the printer and the new cartridges. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot.
Check the Cartridges
- Verify compatibility: Ensure the new cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet 6600.
- Inspect for damage: Check for any physical damage, such as scratches on the cartridge contacts or ink leakage.
- Remove protective tape: Make sure you’ve removed the protective tape from the cartridges if applicable.
- Reinstall cartridges: Turn off the printer, remove the cartridges, clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, let them dry, and reinstall them.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. This clears temporary errors in the system.
Clean the Printhead
- Automatic cleaning: Use the printer's control panel to initiate a printhead cleaning process (refer to your printer manual for instructions).
- Manual cleaning:
- Remove the printhead if it's removable.
- Clean the electrical contacts with a damp, lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
Update Printer Firmware
- Connect your printer to a computer and check for any firmware updates via HP's website or HP Smart app. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues with new cartridges.
Test with Old or Different Cartridges
- If possible, try installing the previous cartridges (even if they are low on ink) or another set of compatible cartridges to determine if the issue is specific to the new cartridges.
Hard Reset
- Factory reset: Resetting the printer to factory defaults can sometimes resolve firmware glitches.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
